The Red Lion 1st Bad Review

We went to Red Lion for Derek*s birthday at the beginning of October for 2 nights, having been before. It was filthy, everything was 'tacky', just as well I has brought disinfectant wipes with me! We only stayed one night as I was ill after eating there.Vicky, the previous owner, gave me a receipt for 1 night but charged me for two. I was not aware of this until I arrived home. It was not cheap nearly £200 just for B&B! I feel cheated and will not return, Not a Pleasant Experience. Better places in Yorkshire.

The Red Lion 2nd Bad Review

We have been regulars at the Red Lion for so, so many years. We were disappointed to see the place changing hands so popped in to have a look before booking anything. The window frames are being painted a ghastly luminous green and the outside looks scruffy and distasteful. So very disappointing. The place is open but looks closed. The main rooms are stark and not clean. We always loved room 1 bedroom as the open fire created a magical atmosphere. We asked but the fire is not being used. The soul of this atmospheric old place has been sucked out in the blink of an eye. We saw people eating breakfast in the small lounge, it looked meagre and unappetising and again no fire that before made it so cozy. Sadly we will not book again unless there is a huge improvement and this was one of our firm favourites.

The Red Lion 3rd Bad Review ... The hotel room was located in the Manor House which was dark, dingy and smelled of damp. The window coverings were mouldy and the bathroom v v small and outdated with a small very old shower. It is in need of a significant update. As a diagnosed coeliac they struggled to offer me anything gf to eat the staff stressedin adapting to recent management take over. Very poor ! Walking on dales way could have done with nice hot bath and good food. Neither available!

The Red Lion 4rd Bad Review ... The room we had in the mansion house was very dated and definitely not worth the £130 that we paid for one night. I e we’re shocked at the price but we were expecting a very nice room so was happy to pay, how wrong we were. For that price we expected much more luxury than we got. We even had to ask for biscuits, this is just standard in a hotel room, especially when you pay over £100 for it. I was given 4 tiny shortbread biscuits on a plate. The staff both on the evening and morning looked stressed and under pressure. The food was nice but that was the only positive about our stay. We had breakfast booked for 9:15 but had to wait over half an hour before anybody came to take our order. Doing the Dalesway we had to be out and start our walk, but was massively delayed due to the slow service. Many other things that were wrong that showed no management giving guidance to staff. The bar was full of empty glasses on the evening which made it look a very low class establishment and looked a mess. I was extremely socked as I have been there previously years ago, what a difference! When checking out the lady asked how our stay was, I replied not bad, thinking she would ask what made it not great, but didn’t! She just repeated what I said and gave a little laugh. They obviously have the monopoly in Burnsall, but I will never choose there again. Think it needs massive refurbishment to warrant the prices charged for the rooms and staff training to sort out the issues with service.

The Red Lion 5th Bad Review ... Having stayed here before in 2000 (when it impressed me greatly), there is no doubt that in our view The Red Lion is trading on those past glories. The beautiful location and the fact that there is no competition made for an experience that appears to be characterised by a complacency. The place is grossly overpriced, and staff, except one or two who appear not to care, and disinterested. Customers, believe it or not, pay the wages. A two night stay in a cottage for four costs the thick end of £550 bed and breakfast - 4* prices for 2* accredited hotel (according to their website). Think cottage, and it brings many images. The reality is that these are more like staff quarters, and our photos show the clear lack of attention to detail, care and outdated decor. Don't be fooled like we were by the photos on their website. Have the owners actually been in to see what they are offering? Walls need painting, wallpaper hanging off the wall and black marks around the bath. There seems to be a complete lack of interest in providing the quality one expects from such a price as mentioned above.

The Red Lion 6th Bad Review ... This place is definitely not worth the money. The rooms are in a very poor condition and are in desperate need of an upgrade. We stayed in the Manor House, which sounds quite grand, but be careful as it is situated away from the main pub which is a dark and uncomfortable walk away on a dark and cold wintry night. Our stay started really badly as we were supposed to be in room 41 in the Manor House, but the guy on reception couldn’t find the key. He found a spare for us and we went over to the Manor House, but before we used the key we thought there might already be somebody in that room, so we knocked and yes, there was. So we had to walk back to the pub reception to sort it out, which resulted in us getting the key for room 40. We trudged back down to the Manor House and walked up the two flights of stairs to the new room. This room was not what we were expecting, being in need of modernisation and decoration but the main problem was that it was really cold as the radiator in the bedroom was hardly warm. Not only that, but there was a very strong smell of bad eggs coming from the WC. There are no telephones in the room, so we had to trudge again over to the pub reception to get something sorted. Someone eventually came over to sort the problem but were unable to fix it, so they eventually agreed to try to find another room for us. After a while, someone came back and said we could move to room 33. This room was warmer than the previous room, but it looked like the bed had been used. Anyway, all this fuss had cost us a lot of time and we had to get ready for a function, so we just carried on and got ready. We later found out that somebody else at our function had been originally allocated room 33, but had asked to be moved because it was too cold. They were then moved in to a lot better room in the main pub building, but they told us at the function that they were actually in the bed under the bedding fully clothed to keep warm. So then we understood why the bed looked slept in. So, that was the room saga. I recounted all our problems to a tall, ginger haired bespectacled member of staff who seemed to be not the least bothered about our issues and put it down to 'one of those things”. He also seemed quite used to dealing with dissatisfied customers, which clearly is unsurprising. His manner was quite rude and uncaring and I would have expected something better from the staff of an establishment charging £100 per night. Needless to say, we won’t be going back.
